What I also find important is the day you buy your tickets. They are usually cheaper under the week (Tuesday to Thursday) than on the weekends, since more people are looking for plane tickets on the weekends. For example, I was able to save 36€ on my flight to Malaga just by booking on Wednesday instead of Sunday.
Sometimes it is also a good idea to look for different airports for your outbound and inbound flights. I wanted to go to Faro (Portugal) in April but waited too long to buy tickets. So instead of flying from Cork (Ireland) to Faro (Portugal), my outbound flight is from Dublin to Faro and the inbound flight is from Faro to Cork. This way I saved so much money that it was enough to cover my accommodation (and an ice cream) as well.

I have to say skyscanner is by far my favourite. I always find it is the cheapest way to book a flight with the best options
