Was your DM Japanese? Maybe his/her English is limited in differentiating squid from cuttlefish. No worries; not the end of the world.

We are planning to spend 3 nights/3 days in Zamami in September. Hope we can dive in the typhoon season. hopefully it will be okay. i was wondering if you recommend anything else besides diving and chilling in the pool. i mean if we have one day to spare, should we island hop or just explore zamami? or do a second dive or snorkel? what would you suggest?
Thanks !

@Toni I was really surprised as well and if you go further west (which I didn’t) you get schools of hammerhead sharks. A good reason to go back :). Hope that you get to see a squid on your dive.

Now I’ll make sure I update my dive certificate before I go, seeing a squid would be fantastic, how lucky that was.

@Mirre – These photos are from diving but I heard the snorkeling is great as well. I saw a sea turtle while SUP – the water is really clear.

@ Jim – I’m definitely going back and hadn’t considered it before either. I haven’t dove in Indonesia yet but would love to. Thanks for the recommendations. I thought it was a cuttlefish as well but the DM insisted that it was a squid. Whatever it was, it was my first time seeing one and I loved observing it.

@Juliette – I had no idea it was so good either. The Dive Master used an Olympus camera.

Definitely adding Okinawa to my scuba bucket list! Looks like great visibility and plenty of coral and marine species. I love the photo of the turtle – just beautiful! What camera do you use underwater?

Thanks! You didn’t mention Indonesia as a place you dived, but you should check it out, as well. Lembeh and Komodo are our current favorites and our most experienced dive friends tell us it’s hard to beat Raja Ampat. btw – I believe that’s a cuttlefish (not a squid, although they are related). We’ve encountered quite a few, but still get excited when we see them!
