I think Kootenay National Park definitely gets overlooked in favor of Banff, but it really is beautiful.

I have never done that hike, but adding it to our list. What gorgeous pictures!

@Barry – Yes, there are a couple of ways to do it and extend the Stanley Glacier hike. The trail described above is to the first view point.

The hike can be done as a loop around both sides of the valley. The toe of the glacier is easily accessible and hiking head on provides a view of a terminal moraine with a waterfall behind coming off the toe of the glacier. It’s a good one. Can be crowded in the summer but most people only go to the first viewpoint. Be prepared to navigate through multiple shallow streams of frigid water on the final approach. Neoprene socks in sandals does the job.

I also haven’t been to Glacier National Park, even though it is really close to where I grew up. I’ve heard it is stunning. So many places, so little time 🙂

@Migrationology – Hiking glaciers in Patagonia sounds amazing. I really want to make it there some day.

@Audrey – Thanks and agreed, I think people tend to go to the well known places and the lesser well known places get less visitors, which makes them more appealing in my opinion. I absolutely love Yoho as well, although I haven’t spent as much time there as I would have liked.

I live in the Banff area and witness the hoards of tourists that come through on their rush loop of Banff, Lake Louise, the Icefields Parkway and up to Jasper, there is so much more to explore. Another lesser frequented area is Yoho National Park, also located in British Columbia.

I’m with you in loving the different times of the year and the opposite atmosphere on the same trail depending on the season. It’s reason to hike the same trail over and over again! Awesome pictures!
