I,with my young family, went to see shamu at Seaworld,and he’s supposed family a long while ago and didn’t consider it cruel in the least.
I understand the breeding program has now been halted.
I stupidly believed the fact that the tank was huge all these magnificent mammals needs were being met. I didn’t consider that captivity is just that,prison. They must have been miserable.
No provision was evident for natural whale behavior. It makes me sad to think I was a willing participant in this.
There were also sealions and if I remember, a walrus, being exhibited.
In October I am visiting Sri Lanka and as a result of your information, will not be putting myself first to get photos,but the animals, who are essentially living in their own living rooms.
How would we like it?
If I am lucky enough to catch a glimpse of an elephant or leopard or any other animal, it will be on their terms,not mine.

As an animal welfare advocate, this hits close to home. I am really glad that you took the time to spread awareness through your blog as not every traveler knows what they are getting themselves into.

I traveled to Thailand a few years back and I have seen the suffering of elephants with their designated mahouts. I confronted one with a few dollars in my hand not because I would like a quick ride but I wanted to give the elephant a few minutes to rest. He probably thought I was one crazy tourist!
