Chamonix is a mountain resort town with a population of ~10,000. There’s more to do there than in Les Houches which has a population of ~ 3000.
Hotel prices are approximately 7% more expensive than in Les Houches. However, you’ll also have a much larger choice of restaurants and a livelier atmosphere.
If you’re here in winter for skiing or in Chamonix in summer, you’ll want to book early as accommodations book early.
Accommodations in Chamonix and Les Houches for our Self-Guided TMB Tour
Our 6 and 7-day self-guided TMB tours start in Les Houches. While the 10-day tour starts in Chamonix.
Les Houches is ~ 10 – 15-minute train ride from Chamonix. You can choose to spend the night before your tour in either Les Houches or Chamonix.
If you stay in Chamonix, ask your accommodation for the Chamonix Guest Card. It’s free and includes all public transportation within the Chamonix valley, including the train to Les Houches, at no extra cost to you.
If you need any less minute hiking gear, like hiking poles, you’ll definitely want to get it in Chamonix.
As they are so close, it’s fine to stay in either Les Houches or Chamonix the night before your 6 or 7-day tour. If you’re doing our 10-day tour you’ll want to stay in Chamonix.
On the day your tour finishes, we recommend staying in Chamonix regardless of which of our self-guided TMB tours you’re doing since they all finish in Chamonix.
IMPORTANT: If you choose luggage transfer for your self-guided TMB tour, stay at a hotel with reception, not an apartment, Airbnb or VRBO. Otherwise, it’s VERY inconvenient to arrange for luggage pickup and dropoff.

If it’s an apartment or private accommodation, we’ve also indicated that since you shouldn’t choose this option if you’re doing our TMB and have chosen the luggage transfer option.
If you’re not doing the TMB, however, private accommodations in Chamonix can be cheaper than hotels and a great option as many include a kitchen so you can also prepare some of your meals there, saving you money.

This popular hotel is a good choice if you’re on a budget. It features sun terraces, and a food court where you can enjoy hamburgers, pizzas, and French cuisine.
There are board and arcade games available making it a good choice for families.
In winter, ski storage space is available and it’s possible to rent ski equipment.
