That’s according to National Geographic in an article titled: Top 10 Trolley Rides. According to our guide, the Budapest Tram #2 is the second most scenic tram journey in the world (after San Francisco). However, I couldn’t find anything substantiating her claims.
Tram number 2 gracefully glides between Közvágóhíd H and Jászai Mari tér, unveiling the city’s prominent landmarks along the way.
The journey unveils a tapestry of breathtaking architectural marvels and the timeless beauty of the iconic Danube River and Buda Hills, providing an ideal canvas for capturing picture-perfect moments.
The Scenic Tram Journey Through Budapest
Tram #2 on the Pest side of the river of Budapest follows the Danube River. The metro lines provide views of Buda and Buda Castle on the other side of the Danube.
On the Pest side, you are treated to views of the baroque neo-Gothic Hungarian Parliament building up close. Along with several UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Chain Bridge.

The bridge’s magnificent design and captivating night lighting cast an ethereal aura, transforming it into a must-see spectacle as the tram approaches Eötvös tér station.
You can also admire the lush Gellért Hill, graced by the iconic Liberty Statue and Citadel.
The hill’s verdant foliage creates a striking contrast against the backdrop of the city’s urban landscape, offering a scenic treat during your tram journey on one of the most popular lines.
Eötvös tér, nestled near the Chain Bridge, is a picturesque square inviting you to pause and savor the surrounding views.
This idyllic spot is perfect for a leisurely stroll is the quickest way to relish the enchanting Danube promenade and soak in the city’s vibrant ambiance.

Buda Castle and the Shoes on the Danube Promenade, a memorial to the Jews who died in WWII.
Undoubtedly, one of my favorite sites was the Jewish Holocaust Memorial, which pays tribute to Jews that died in WWII. It features shoes along the Danube riverbank.
Even so, it is a stark contrast to the grandeur of the buildings lining the riverbank and I think it’s this subtly that makes it so powerful. (See photo below)
Regardless of where Budapest tram #2 falls in the rankings, I thought it was a beautiful journey. Take a look:

Know Before You Hop on Europe’s Most Scenic Tram
You can hop on Budapest tram #2 at Jaszari Mari Square and continue along the Danube. During my visit, part of Budapest’s trams track was closed for construction.
So I wasn’t able to travel the entire route of the metro stations past the parliament building. However, construction is expected to be finished sometime in Spring 2014.
Travel tip: You should definitely sit on the side closest to the river Danube for the most scenic views.
Cost: I used my Budapest travel card, so it was included in the price, but a 24-hour fare good for unlimited public transportation for city tours can be purchased for 1500 HUF (~5 EUR). Other than a Budapest card, a single ticket type of ticket can also be purchased.
I can’t think of a better, or more cost-effective way to see Budapest. Furthermore, it’s worth going both during the day and in the evening for a completely different perspective. One of the highlights of my trip to Budapest!

The hotel has a unique decor and brilliant decor style as well as a relaxing wellness center and a restaurant.
3-Star
D8 Hotel offers modern decor and rooms with private bathrooms. There are a shared lounge and bar that guests are welcome to use.
Guests can enjoy a full buffet breakfast each morning.
Casati Budapest Hotel Superior is housed in an 18th Century building and is an adult-only hotel. The hotel offers 4 different room styles which guests are free to choose from.
Guests have access to a small fitness center, sauna, and a landscaped courtyard.

Travel Passes
Consider purchasing a 24-hour travel card or a valid ticket for 72-hour Budapest Card at the ticket offices for unlimited travel on trams, buses, and metro lines.
This flexibility easiest way for you to explore the sights at your own pace whilst avoiding the hassle of buying a new ticket for every tram stops.
Avoid Rush Hour(s)
Opt for non-peak hours to enjoy a quieter, more spacious tram ride. Early mornings and late evenings offer better lighting for photography and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Best Seats
Sit or stand near the windows on the right side of the Budapest tram when facing forward. This position offers optimal views of the attractions along the interesting routes, enhancing your journey.
Evening Magic
Riding Tram #2 after sunset is a must. Budapest’s landmarks are beautifully illuminated, providing a captivating perspective of the city’s charm.
Occasional Transfers
Some parts of the route involve short walks due to dedicated tracks. While thes suburban trains transfers are necessary, they are a good way to explore Budapest’s impressive streets up close.
