However, thanks for putting light to the possible dangers that might arise, like AMS to be precise! Articles like these aware independent trekkers to prepare for their treks better. Cheers! 🙂

@Antonette – Agreed, we saw one girl who had to get carried out by helicopter when it was obvious she was suffering from severe altitude sickness. A week later we found out it was pulmonary embolism and she was still in critical condition. I don’t know whether or not she survived. She was 29. With a guide, that wouldn’t have happened, s/he would have recognized the symptoms and made her return before it got that bad. Guides are also good at making sure you’re not going to fast and giving you cures when you do feel sick. I also brought some peppermint oil which I inhaled and that helped the headache.

I think it’s a good thing because many people don’t realize what they are getting themselves into. We decided right from the start we would go with a guide because we didn’t feel like having to figure everything out by ourselves. It may be a bit more expensive but I enjoyed it a lot when on the Inca Trail and they will also be able to offer you appropriate help when in need of it. I’m getting kind of anxious about the altitude though, we are taking the “hard” route over Cho La Pass up to 5.420 meters so it will be quite a challenge…

In an instance like this worth dishing out the extra money.
